GTA 6 Preorder Numbers Leak: What Is Real and What Is Unverified

MFMSyndicate Intel Officer

GTA 6 preorders have produced dramatic headlines about platform splits, Ultimate Edition demand and billions in revenue. The problem is that Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have not released a detailed public sales table for GTA 6 preorders.

One widely circulated claim says 81.8% of PS5 preorders selected the Ultimate Edition and that 72% of combined PlayStation and Xbox preorders chose Ultimate. Those percentages were posted without underlying unit data or an independently verifiable report. They should be treated as an unconfirmed leak—not an official measure of demand.

Watch our original preorder-controversy breakdown.

What the alleged leak claims

Coverage of the rumor attributes the figures to a social-media account rather than Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft. The reported split places PS5 heavily toward Ultimate while Xbox supposedly favors Standard.

Even if the percentages were copied correctly, a platform share is not a sales total. Without the sample period, countries, retailers, refund treatment and number of orders, readers cannot evaluate the claim.

Confirmed facts

  • GTA 6 preorders are officially open for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Rockstar offers Standard and Ultimate Editions.
  • The U.S. digital listings show Ultimate at a premium over Standard.
  • The retail Standard Edition is code-in-box rather than a game disc.
  • Sony says disc production for new PlayStation releases will end in January 2028.

Unverified claims

  • Rockstar has not confirmed the 81.8% PS5 Ultimate figure.
  • No official global preorder unit total has been released.
  • Viral estimates of billions in preorder revenue are not supported by public audited sales data.
  • Reports from individual stores do not establish worldwide demand.

Why the percentages are difficult to trust

Reliable sales data needs scope. A platform holder can see its own store, a retailer can see its orders and a publisher can aggregate multiple channels. An outside account must explain where its numbers came from.

The rumored breakdown does not provide raw units. Eighty percent of a small early sample could look impressive while representing little of the final market. Digital and retail orders also behave differently: a code-in-box purchase can be tracked by a retailer while a console-store order stays inside Sony or Microsoft systems.

Refunds and payment timing complicate the picture further. Microsoft may charge certain preorders closer to release depending on the payment method, while PlayStation charges at purchase in the U.S. A “preorder” may therefore mean a reservation, a completed transaction or an order that can still be canceled.

The code-in-box controversy is real

Rockstar’s store says physical Standard Edition packages contain a download code and no disc. The box is expected to ship early enough to support the November 12 preload.

That decision frustrates players who value preservation, lending, resale and offline installation. A code can generally be redeemed once and becomes tied to an account, while a disc can be moved between compatible consoles and sold.

The packaging is still a physical retail product, but it is not a physical copy of the game data. Our GTA 6 code-in-box guide explains that distinction, and our PS5 download-code warning covers region and expiration issues.

Did GTA 6 cause PlayStation’s 2028 decision?

There is no evidence that GTA 6 caused Sony’s policy. PlayStation announced that disc production for new releases will end in January 2028 because consumer preferences have shifted toward digital access.

GTA 6 launches more than a year earlier under the current schedule. Rockstar chose code-in-box packaging for this product; Sony announced a broader future platform policy. The decisions point in the same digital direction but should not be collapsed into a single cause.

Games released before January 2028 in disc format are not retroactively affected by Sony’s announcement.

Scalpers and digital codes

Paying above the official price for an unredeemed digital code is unnecessary when authorized storefronts have stock. A reseller may send the wrong region, an already-used code or a code obtained through a questionable transaction.

Buy from Rockstar, PlayStation, Microsoft or an authorized retailer. Compare the final price and exact edition before checkout. A digital product does not have the same manufacturing scarcity as a collector’s item, so “sold out forever” pressure should be treated skeptically.

Do not post a code, receipt or redemption screen publicly. The code itself functions like a key, and a person who obtains it can attempt to redeem the purchase.

Do labor developments threaten the release date?

Rockstar workers’ organization and bargaining news deserves accurate coverage, but no public evidence shows that a specific recognition dispute has changed GTA 6’s release date. Take-Two still lists November 19, 2026.

Workplace conditions can affect a large project, and employees have the right to discuss them. Turning every labor development into an imminent delay claim goes beyond the evidence. See our Rockstar union meeting explanation for the verified context.

How to evaluate future preorder claims

Look for five things:

  1. A named source with direct access to sales data.
  2. Unit totals, not only percentages.
  3. A defined period and geographic scope.
  4. Clear treatment of cancellations and refunds.
  5. Confirmation from Rockstar, Take-Two or a platform holder.

A retailer ranking can show relative popularity on that storefront. It cannot prove global units. A viral post can start a useful discussion without becoming a confirmed fact.

Our verdict

GTA 6 is clearly a major commercial release, but the circulated preorder splits remain unverified. The code-in-box packaging and PlayStation’s 2028 disc policy are confirmed. Claims that most PS5 buyers chose Ultimate, that preorders generated a specific multibillion-dollar total or that labor action has delayed the game are not confirmed.

The correct headline is therefore “preorder numbers allegedly leaked,” not “Rockstar reveals preorder sales.”
