GTA 6 Looks Different in Sony’s New PS5 Promo—But Is It a New Build?

Sony’s new “It Happens on PS5” campaign includes brief GTA 6 clips, and one familiar Trailer 2 scene looks different. The promotional version fills the screen instead of using the original cinematic letterbox, appears brighter and may show small changes in color and facial presentation.

Those observations are real. The conclusion that Rockstar revealed a new build—or downgraded the game—is not established.

Original source — TikTok: GTA 6 looks different in a new PS5 promo

The TikTok post asks whether PlayStation quietly changed something. Direct inspection confirms it is a standard video post published August 17, 2026. Its public caption is available, but no reliable public transcript was exposed; this article does not invent dialogue or unseen on-screen claims.

What Sony officially announced

Sony Interactive Entertainment launched the new “It Happens on PS5” hero advert on August 17. The official PlayStation Blog says the campaign highlights games available now and coming soon, including Grand Theft Auto VI, Marvel’s Wolverine, 007 First Light and God of War Laufey.

The advert moves rapidly between dramatic game moments. Sony specifically describes a high-speed jet-ski chase, which is drawn from GTA 6 footage, but it does not call the clips a new Rockstar trailer, gameplay reveal or updated build.

Confirmed: GTA 6 appears in an official PlayStation campaign.

Confirmed: The campaign uses snippets of footage already associated with GTA 6 Trailer 2.

Not confirmed: Sony and Rockstar have not said the ad contains a newer playable build.

Not confirmed: No graphics downgrade or character redesign has been announced.

What looks different

GameSpot compared the new promotion with GTA 6 Trailer 2 and highlighted three visible differences.

First, the scene in which Jason holds onto a moving convertible no longer has Trailer 2’s black horizontal bars. The PS5 advert presents the material in a full-screen format.

Second, the promo appears lighter. Dark areas have more visible detail, changing how faces, hair and the surrounding scene read on screen.

Third, Lucia’s eyebrows and hair appear slightly different in the reformatted clip. Her eyebrows look less pronounced and her hair appears browner in the lighter grade.

These are observations about two finished video presentations, not measurements of the underlying game. The original trailer and the new advertisement were edited for different purposes, runtimes and layouts.

Why removed letterboxing is not a graphics upgrade

Letterboxing is a presentation choice. Black bars can be added to create a wider cinematic composition even when the source render contains more image above and below. An editor can also crop, zoom or reposition a shot to fit a different aspect ratio.

Removing the bars does not automatically reveal a new camera system or additional playable screen space. Sony may have received a clean version of the existing shot, reframed it for the campaign or used a different export supplied by Rockstar.

Without the source files, we cannot determine whether the full-screen frame contains additional rendered information or simply uses a tighter crop. Either workflow would be normal for a multi-game television and social-media advertisement.

Analysis: The aspect-ratio change is more likely an advertising edit than a gameplay feature announcement.

Unsupported claim: GTA 6 will run in a wider or taller field of view because the PS5 advert removed black bars.

Why the lighting and face can appear different

Small changes in brightness, contrast, compression and color grading can significantly alter a face. Lifting shadows can soften eyebrows, reveal different hair tones and reduce the dramatic contrast of a nighttime or sunset scene.

Video compression adds another variable. Trailer 2, the PS5 hero advertisement, social-media reposts and screenshots may each use different resolutions and encoding. Comparing compressed still frames can exaggerate edge detail or color differences.

Rockstar could also have supplied a later version of the shot. Games change during development, and marketing teams sometimes replace assets. That possibility should be labeled as a possibility—not reported as fact—because neither Sony nor Rockstar identified the clip as updated gameplay.

Our analysis of whether GTA 6 graphics are overhyped explains why edited promotional footage cannot settle final performance or image-quality questions.

Does this prove a GTA 6 downgrade?

No. A downgrade claim requires comparable captures from equivalent builds, scenes, settings and hardware. Here, the available material comes from two differently edited marketing videos.

The lighter PS5 version may look less dramatic to some viewers, but that does not show that texture quality, geometry, lighting systems, crowd density or performance have been reduced. No technical analysis can isolate those systems from such a short reformatted clip.

Rockstar’s official site still promotes GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. It also says the game “Plays Best On PlayStation 5,” while the PlayStation listing describes haptic feedback, controller audio, Tempest 3D Audio and fast loading. None of those pages publishes a final resolution or frame rate.

Is this secret Trailer 3 footage?

Sony’s ad is not labeled Trailer 3. It uses quick snippets inside a broader PS5 campaign and does not present a new GTA 6 narrative sequence.

Rockstar has announced a more substantial event: “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” will premiere on Netflix on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET. Rockstar has not described it as Trailer 3, and viewers should not assume it is a gameplay demonstration until the company says so or the program airs.

The new PS5 advert may be coordinated marketing ahead of that event. That is a reasonable interpretation, but it remains analysis. Sony’s official post does not connect the campaign’s edited GTA 6 clips to the contents of the Extended Look.

What fans should compare next

The August 27 program should provide a better reference than this one-minute multi-game commercial. Useful questions include:

  • Does Rockstar label the footage as gameplay, in-engine or cinematic?
  • Does it identify the capture platform?
  • Are familiar locations shown from comparable camera angles?
  • Do HUD elements, image modes or performance details appear?
  • Does Rockstar publish higher-quality downloads after the premiere?

Even then, final retail performance should be judged using the shipped console versions and controlled testing. Marketing video can show artistic direction, animation and world detail, but it cannot replace a frame-rate analysis.

Sony lists DualSense haptic feedback and controller-speaker effects for GTA 6. The PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller is the first-party controller supporting those features, while the PlayStation DualSense Charging Station is useful for households rotating two controllers.

The PlayStation PULSE Elite Wireless Headset is a first-party audio option for readers who want private listening on PS5. These accessories do not change the graphics shown in the advert.

FAQ

Is the new PS5 promo showing new GTA 6 gameplay?

Sony does not describe it that way. The advert uses brief material associated with Trailer 2, reformatted for a multi-game campaign.

Why are the black bars gone?

The clip was prepared for a full-screen advertisement. It may use a clean source, crop or alternate export; Sony has not documented the editing method.

Did Lucia’s face change?

Her presentation looks slightly different in the lighter clip, but brightness, color grading, compression and reframing can cause those changes. No redesign is confirmed.

Does the clip prove GTA 6 was downgraded?

No. Two differently edited marketing videos cannot establish a technical downgrade.

When is the next official GTA 6 reveal?

Rockstar’s Extended Look is scheduled for August 27 at 3 p.m. ET on Netflix. Rockstar has not officially called it Trailer 3.

Bottom line

GTA 6 does look different in Sony’s new promotion: the letterbox is gone, the image is lighter and small facial details appear altered. The safest explanation is that the material was reformatted and regraded for a different advertisement.

A newer asset is possible, but neither Sony nor Rockstar confirms that. Until comparable footage or technical details appear, the PS5 promo should be treated as fresh marketing—not proof of a graphics downgrade, secret build or Trailer 3.
