Are GTA 6 Graphics Overhyped? What Official Footage Shows
Grand Theft Auto VI looks extraordinary in official trailers, but “best graphics ever” and “overhyped” are both conclusions reached before anyone outside Rockstar has played the finished game. The useful evidence sits between those extremes.
Rockstar and Take-Two state that Trailer 2 was captured on PlayStation 5. That makes the footage more meaningful than a cinematic rendered only on an unspecified high-end workstation. It still remains a carefully selected and edited trailer, not an unbroken performance test.

What the PS5 capture confirms
The official Trailer 2 announcement says the footage was captured on PS5. It demonstrates that Rockstar’s scenes, characters, vehicles and lighting can run within a console-targeted version of the game in some form.
It does not confirm the retail resolution, frame rate, graphics modes or whether every shot represents ordinary free-roam gameplay. Editing can select favorable times of day, camera angles and scenes. Compression on YouTube can also hide or introduce visual artifacts.
Confirmed facts
- Trailer 2 footage was captured on PlayStation 5.
- GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Official screenshots show Vice City and the wider state of Leonida across multiple environments.
- Rockstar has not announced frame-rate or resolution targets for each console.
Analysis and unknowns
- Trailer footage suggests sophisticated lighting, animation and crowd rendering, but final quality can change before launch.
- A 60fps mode has not been officially confirmed.
- Differences between PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S remain unannounced.
- Trailer editing cannot show sustained performance during every mission or crowded free-roam event.
Lighting may be the biggest visual upgrade
GTA 6’s official media repeatedly uses difficult lighting conditions: neon at night, bright beaches, humid haze, car interiors, sunsets and rain-slick streets. Convincing results require more than high-resolution textures. Materials must respond consistently, skin and hair need believable shading, and the scene must remain readable as exposure changes.
The trailers show strong color contrast without abandoning geographic realism. Vice City’s saturated nightlife looks different from the muted roads and industry of Port Gellhorn or Ambrosia. That regional art direction can make the world feel richer than a blanket increase in polygon count.
Our Rockstar detail analysis explains why small environmental decisions often matter more than a single technical buzzword.
Animation sells the realism
Lucia and Jason’s expressions, posture and physical contact carry much of Trailer 2’s story. Crowd scenes show people dancing, exercising, filming and reacting. Vehicles lean and move with visible weight.
These sequences likely combine gameplay systems, bespoke animation and cinematic staging. Without a technical breakdown, we cannot identify which moments are fully systemic. The visible consistency is still impressive: characters appear grounded in the same lighting and space instead of floating above the environment.
Animation also has a performance cost. Dense crowds and complex physics compete for CPU and GPU resources with world streaming. That tradeoff is one reason frame-rate claims should wait for Rockstar’s specifications or independent testing of the final build.
Why comparisons can mislead
Side-by-side videos often compare a compressed GTA 6 trailer with direct-feed gameplay from another title, or they enlarge individual frames beyond normal viewing conditions. Different time of day, camera distance and motion blur can make one image appear sharper even when the underlying rendering is not directly comparable.
Official screenshots may also be captured at a higher resolution or with presentation settings chosen for marketing. They are valuable for art and detail analysis, but they do not function as a benchmark.
The most reliable comparison will come after launch using the same console, display mode, route and capture equipment. Until then, avoid declaring a winner based on still frames with different sources.
What remains to be proven
Rockstar still needs to show how the game performs during extended play. Key questions include:
- Does image quality remain stable while driving quickly through dense areas?
- How do crowds, traffic and weather affect performance?
- What resolution and frame-rate modes exist on each console?
- How different are Series S and the more powerful machines?
- Is input response consistent during combat and driving?
Our GTA 6 60fps analysis covers the performance debate. The current answer remains that Rockstar has not confirmed a 60fps mode.
Are the graphics overhyped?
The visual achievement shown so far is real: Trailer 2 was captured on a shipping console family, and the official imagery displays exceptional art direction, animation and environmental density. The hype becomes unreliable only when viewers turn selected footage into unsupported promises about frame rate, resolution or every building being explorable.
Graphics also serve the experience. If Leonida’s lighting helps players read weather, traffic and neighborhoods, or if animation makes characters more believable, the technology is doing more than producing screenshots. If performance is unstable, visual ambition could become a weakness.
The fair verdict is cautiously positive. Rockstar has shown one of the most convincing open worlds in current marketing, but sustained gameplay and the retail build will determine whether it meets the standard implied by the trailers.
