GTA 6 Development Timeline: How Long Has Rockstar Worked on It?

MFMSyndicate Intel Officer

When Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, more than thirteen years will have passed since GTA 5 first reached PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. That calendar gap is extraordinary, but it should not be confused with thirteen uninterrupted years of full-scale GTA 6 production.

Rockstar spent much of the intervening period launching GTA 5 on new platforms, building GTA Online and creating Red Dead Redemption 2. The company has not published a complete internal GTA 6 production calendar. What it has provided are public milestones that let us build an accurate minimum timeline.

Watch our original timeline video.

2013: GTA 5 launches

Grand Theft Auto V debuted on September 17, 2013. Its success reshaped Rockstar’s release cycle. Enhanced versions followed on PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, PC in 2015, and PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022. GTA Online received years of updates alongside those launches.

The existence of a thirteen-year gap does not prove that GTA 6 entered full production immediately after GTA 5. Large studios overlap planning, technology and small preproduction teams, but Rockstar has not dated the beginning of those phases.

2018: Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2 in October 2018 after a large, multi-studio effort. Its official credits show contributions across Rockstar’s global organization. That matters because many of the same studios and disciplines that could support GTA 6 were heavily engaged on Red Dead.

Preproduction for another GTA may have existed during that period, but a precise start date would require an official statement or documented reporting. It is safer to say that Red Dead Redemption 2 was Rockstar’s major public production before GTA 6.

2022: Rockstar confirms active development

On February 4, 2022, Rockstar published the first unambiguous public milestone. The company said active development for the next Grand Theft Auto entry was “well underway” and promised more information when ready.

“Well underway” proves development started before the announcement, but it does not reveal how many years earlier, how large the team was or when full production began. It establishes February 2022 as the latest possible confirmed point—not the true starting line.

Later that year, unfinished development footage was illegally obtained and circulated online. Rockstar acknowledged the intrusion and said work on the next GTA would continue as planned. Leaked material should not be used as a substitute for the finished game, and we will not link to it.

2023: GTA 6 is officially revealed

Rockstar released Trailer 1 on December 4, 2023. It confirmed the title, the fictional state of Leonida, a return to Vice City and a then-planned 2025 release window. Take-Two’s announcement identified PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as launch platforms.

The trailer also introduced Lucia and established the social-media-heavy tone of Leonida. It became the first official footage the public could evaluate rather than relying on rumors or stolen development assets.

2025: Trailer 2 and a dated release

Rockstar released Trailer 2 in May 2025 alongside extensive screenshots and official pages for characters and locations. The company stated that the trailer’s footage was captured on PlayStation 5.

The release plan later moved beyond the original 2025 window. A date of May 26, 2026 was announced before Rockstar ultimately shifted the game to November 19, 2026. Rockstar said additional time was required to complete the game at the expected level of polish.

Our delay-evidence analysis explains why the current November date remains the official target.

2026: Preorders and final launch preparation

Rockstar opened preorders on June 25, 2026 and announced that digital preloading will begin November 12. Take-Two continues to list November 19 in its fiscal outlook and regulatory filing.

Those are commercial milestones, not proof that all development work is finished. Testing, optimization, certification and update preparation can continue close to release. Rockstar has not published an exact “content complete” or “gone gold” date.

So, did GTA 6 take thirteen years to make?

It depends on the meaning of “take.” The public waited thirteen years between the original GTA 5 release and GTA 6’s planned launch. That is accurate. It is not accurate to state as fact that the entire global Rockstar workforce spent all thirteen years producing GTA 6 at full scale.

A more defensible description is that GTA 6 emerged from a thirteen-year company period that also included GTA Online, multiple GTA 5 ports, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online. Active GTA 6 work began sometime before February 2022, but Rockstar has not supplied a precise start date.

The long wait may benefit the final game through technology, world-building and production time. It also creates enormous expectations. The result should be judged on what ships, not on a simplified stopwatch.
