Major GTA and Red Dead Games by Platform: Release Timeline

Last updated: July 31, 2026

Rockstar's biggest games have crossed several console generations, but not every title appeared on every platform. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas never received an original GameCube release, Red Dead Redemption reached PC more than a decade after its console debut, and GTA 6 currently has no announced PC version.

This fact-checked timeline covers the major mainline Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead releases most relevant to modern players. It is not a list of every Rockstar-published game, handheld spin-off, regional package, or later backward-compatible storefront listing.

Major Grand Theft Auto release timeline

GameOriginal releaseMajor later platforms
Grand Theft Auto IIIPS2 (2001)Windows, Xbox, mobile, modern consoles through The Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityPS2 (2002)Windows, Xbox, mobile, modern consoles through The Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasPS2 (2004)Windows, Xbox, mobile, modern consoles through The Definitive Edition
Grand Theft Auto IVPS3, Xbox 360 (2008)Windows (2008)
Grand Theft Auto VPS3, Xbox 360 (2013)PS4, Xbox One, Windows, PS5, Xbox Series X
Grand Theft Auto VIPS5, Xbox Series XS (2026)

Platform availability can differ by region and storefront, and older editions may be delisted even when newer collections remain available.

Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas

The three PS2-era 3D games helped define the open-world formula. GTA III debuted on PS2 in 2001, Vice City followed in 2002, and San Andreas arrived in 2004. All three later came to Windows and Xbox.

One common error is listing San Andreas as a GameCube game. It was not released for Nintendo GameCube. Modern Nintendo players can access the remastered trilogy on Nintendo Switch through Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, but that is a later collection, not an original GameCube port.

The Definitive Edition also brought the trilogy to PS4, PS5 through compatibility, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Windows, and mobile services in different forms. That history shows why “available on” and “originally released for” should not be treated as the same thing.

Grand Theft Auto IV

GTA IV launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in April 2008, followed by Windows in December 2008. Unlike GTA V, it has not received a native PS4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series remaster.

Xbox players may be able to run the Xbox 360 version through backward compatibility. That does not turn it into a native current-generation edition, and availability should always be checked in the local Xbox storefront.

Grand Theft Auto V

GTA V has the broadest multi-generation path in the series:

  • PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013
  • PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014
  • Windows in April 2015
  • PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in March 2022

The 2022 editions added current-generation presentation and performance options rather than merely relying on backward compatibility. GTA V's staggered releases are also why players expect a GTA 6 PC version eventually, although Rockstar has not announced one. Our GTA 6 PC release analysis separates that expectation from what is confirmed.

Grand Theft Auto VI

GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar does not list PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, or PC.

That means GTA 6 is the first mainline entry designed to debut exclusively on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console generation. Any claim about another platform should be treated as rumor until Rockstar updates its official GTA 6 page.

Major Red Dead release timeline

GameOriginal releaseMajor later platforms
Red Dead RevolverPS2, Xbox (2004)Later offered as a PS2 classic on newer PlayStation systems
Red Dead RedemptionPS3, Xbox 360 (2010)PS4, Switch, Windows, PS5, Xbox Series X
Red Dead Redemption 2PS4, Xbox One (2018)Windows and Stadia (2019); newer consoles via backward compatibility

Red Dead Revolver

Red Dead Revolver began the franchise in 2004 on PS2 and the original Xbox. It is structurally different from the later open-world Redemption games, but it established the Western setting and title that Rockstar would expand.

Some PlayStation storefronts have offered the PS2 version as a classic. That is emulation of an older release, not a modern remake.

Red Dead Redemption

The original Red Dead Redemption launched for PS3 and Xbox 360 in May 2010. Its platform history then became unusually long:

  • PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions released in August 2023
  • The Windows version released on October 29, 2024
  • Rockstar announced PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, and Android versions for December 2, 2025

This corrects another frequent timeline mistake: the PC edition arrived in 2024, not 2025. Rockstar's official store page provides the PC release date, while its 2025 platform announcement covers the later console and mobile expansion.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018, followed by Windows in November 2019. Google Stadia also received a version in 2019, but the Stadia service has since closed.

Rockstar has not announced a native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition of Red Dead Redemption 2. The PS4 and Xbox One versions can be played on newer hardware through backward compatibility, but that should not be described as a current-generation remaster or an official enhancement patch.

Which console covers the most Rockstar history?

There is no single modern platform with every version. Xbox backward compatibility can provide convenient access to several older Xbox releases, while PlayStation offers its own catalog of native games, remasters, and classics. PC has GTA IV, GTA V, the classic trilogy in multiple forms, Red Dead Redemption, and Red Dead Redemption 2—but not a confirmed GTA 6 edition.

For GTA 6 specifically, the choice is much simpler: PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Read our current GTA 6 performance analysis before assuming either version will include a particular graphics mode.
